At the very outset let me clarify that I am neither a religious scholar nor do I have disciplined knowledge about the Muslim faith. The views expressed in this article are purely based on the perspective that one has developed over the course of past many years. This is by no means a critique of a faith that millions of folks all over the world follow. I have nothing against any individual nor do I intend to annoy, offend or hurt the feelings of anyone from any particular sect/religion.To begin with, paradoxical and contradictory it may sound, amidst all this opulent irreverence, the Muslims claim that there is a ‘back-to-religion’ movement the world over, even in Scandinavia and the USA – perhaps ‘as a reaction to the unlimited and incessant indulgence in the pleasures of the flesh or maybe as a refuge from the feeling of emptiness it leaves within’.

The followers of Islam also believe that the religion is attracting more adherents compared to other faiths. Interestingly many of the new converts and the ‘not so happy Muslims’ are keen to find out for themselves how the ‘old faithful’ are handling their religious commitments.

What is attracting them to Islam is its claim that ‘it abhors rituals like the ones elaborated by the Catholic Church or the ceremonials adopted by the Brahmin to elevate himself into a superior caste’.

Also, the religion is based on ‘a complete code of life combining the spiritual with the temporal’. But what is offering the greatest attraction to the common folk? To the Afro-Americans in particular is Islam’s stern repudiation and rejection of any distinction of race, color, caste or social standing.

The outsider’s quest for true Islam should induce the followers of the faith to re-examine for themselves and to see if they shall be repelling and driving away the new converts or helping them consolidate their faith. Some tough questions, therefore, need to be answered and a minute soul-searching is called for.

The first point we have to bear in mind is that more mosques do not necessarily mean more Islam, that is to say greater compliance with the Islamic code of life. If that were true, the estimated five-fold increase in the number of mosques across the land since the establishment of a country like Pakistan should have resulted in evidence of more devotion, piety and piousness. But that unfortunately has not happened. If anything, there has been a terrible deterioration in the overall national character, which amongst others includes the curse of religious intolerance, hatred amongst various sects of Muslims, and a virtual nullification of the good and the virtuous.

It is indeed shameful, and the Muslims will have to admit, that today they have more of dishonesty and debauchery, and more of normal failings than ever before. The worst of it is the insensitivity toward other religions and disrespect for those who do not ‘qualify’ to be regarded as Muslims. What we witness, therefore, is an absolute brutal decline/downfall in the fortunes of the Muslims the world over.

The Muslims need to look into the phenomenon more closely without inventing excuses or shifting blame. There undoubtedly are economic forces that are grinding the followers of Islam down to desperation and there also is the communication revolution that provides a vision of a more colorful life in the hereafter, all have contributed to the quandary, to the situation in which the Muslims find themselves today.

Worst of all, the Muslim religious divines, instead of rebuilding/reconstructing the overall Islamic character are busy brainwashing the young for waging Jihad on the Jews and the Christians. My question is: what has Islam done to save the Muslims from this disastrous fate?

The answer is to be found in separating the spiritual from the temporal in flagrant renunciation of one of the basic principles of the Muslim faith, namely that Islam is a complete, ‘indivisible’ code of conduct. The Muslims seem to have split between Christ and Caesar.

It may be heartbreaking to confess but it is nevertheless true that the same man who kneels abjectly before his God in the mosque, pledging himself eternally in truth and honesty, walks over to his business place and violates all those commitments. His adulterates life-giving foodstuffs and life-saving drugs; he cheats on his weights and measures; he mixes inferior qualities of merchandize with superior; doctors his accounts; cooks his bills and so on and so forth.

Furthermore, this state of affairs points to the inadequacy of the sort of religious teaching that induces compliance with its tenets. Learning the Holy Quran by heart or reciting it with fervor is hugely commendable. But the real benefit accrues only from a comprehension of the crux of God’s message. Most khateebs (Muslim religious scholars) in their sermons tend to dwell on the supernatural and the far-fetched, and try to regulate the lives of their followers with stories they think will excite and hold their interest, while others seek to enhance their popularity by arousing sentiments on parochial sectarian/religious issues.

It is difficult to figure out how much of it is prompted by ulterior, materialistic motives. The first fault can possibly be easily remedied by convincing the khateebs that what the Muslim society needs most today is convincing the followers that observance of Haqood-al-Abad (rights of the people) is at least as important as Haqooq-Allah (rights of God), if not more; that is to say, while God might condone missing a prayer or two (out of the five mandatory ones during the course of the day), He will not forgive any wrongs to our fellow human beings, irrespective of their race, creed or religion.

For instance, there is no forgiveness for a shopkeeper who short-changes his customers, for the chemist who sells fake life-saving drugs or the sweetmeat seller whose use of cheap quality oil paralyses half a dozen people for life, or for a contractor who builds a bridge that collapses under a busload of passengers, or a judge who sells justice, or a police official who tortures the innocent, or a farmer who runs his water supply on stolen power supply or tempers with his gas meter.

On a larger scale, suicide bombings are not allowed; taking away innocent lives in the name of God is absolutely a no-go area; crashing planes into buildings and playing havoc with other nation’s integrity in order to ‘teach them a lesson’ is perhaps the most disgusting and intrusive form of recklessness that characterizes modern-day Islam.

The khateebs will be doing a greater service to the society and Islam by driving home these points related to everyday life and, in the meantime, refrain from entertaining their listeners/followers with fascinating stories/tales of ‘another world’.

More than that, their sermons will carry conviction only if people see them practice what they preach. Ironically, they do sermonize equality and brotherhood during the annual Haj (Muslim congregation) sermon, yet, the Saudi royal family has an exclusive enclosure in the Kaaba! Is it hypocrisy or is there something inherently wrong with Islam?

The religious divines who take upon themselves the onus of determining which sect is right and which is wrong or who is a good Muslim and who is a kafir (infidel) are being too presumptuous, rather audacious. The Lord has not entrusted them with any such mission. Frequently their own party is in question; and by defying God’s directive against sitting judgment over faith of fellow Muslims or those from other faiths, to the extent of killing them, they render themselves liable to be treated as any other murderer – a common criminal who deserves no mercy. In fact, they merit divine wrath of dividing the Muslim world.

One does notice that a lot many Muslim countries indulge in sectarian strife at the state level. We would have been sparred of the wrath of the Taliban had the Saudis been not so keen on spreading Wahabism in every nook and corner of the Muslim world. They are a classic example of inciting intra-Muslim dissension and using their oil money to fight their ‘war’ for political and sectarian primacy.

Worst still is the racial bias that, despite the religion’s strict prohibition of any distinction between Muslims (save on the basis of piety), still shows up consistently. The way almost all Arab states lined up with Iraq back in the decade of 1980s in its aggression against Iran profoundly compromised the religion’s claim to be a unifying force that makes no distinction among its followers on the basis of race, color or culture.

There is also a feeling that the Arabs do not take the same measure of interest in overall Islamic causes the Muslim world collectively does on issues that are a primary concern to the Arabs.

Finally, it is flagrant failures of the opulent members of the Muslim world to comply with the basics of the Islamic moral code that is causing deep distress and disillusionment amongst those who can be regarded as the silent minority, who would like. What angers them even more is the pretence of being ‘superior’ Muslims by virtue of the fact that they follow the Islamic practices habitually even though they violate the fundamental tenets of the faith. But for this blatant hypocrisy, a lot more people the world over might have been swarming into the Islamic world.

Despite the change of times, Muslims enjoy unprecedented freedom in the United States to worship and preach their faith. Young Muslims who come here for education worship together as Muslims and not as Shittes or Sunnis, bow, pray, plead and implore forgiveness from their Lord, mix-up with each other without prejudice or discrimination. The fact that most of them are educated and enlightened and act the same way enables them to rise above parochial, sectarian and ethnic interests and work for the betterment of the community as a whole.

As for ‘the politicized Muslims’, things will not improve unless the teachings of the ‘real Islam’ are followed; an Islam without sloganeering against Jews, Hindus, Christians, Shites or Sunnis, an Islam without moral and spiritual corruption, an Islam without guns and grenades, suicide bombings and the ‘grand plans’ to destroy the West; an Islam which grants due respect to any one and every human being; an Islam which provides rights to all individuals irrespective of their color, caste, creed, sect or religion; an Islam that leads by example.

The Muslims need to stop pointing fingers at other religions and take stock of their own situation. They need to learn from other faiths. Respect the ideals for which the followers of those faiths stand for. Preach peace instead of prejudice that ends up in abstract hatred that conveys no sense whatsoever.

The Muslims need to loosen up! Confining the religion to orthodoxy hasn’t got the Muslims anywhere. In fact, so far, it appears that it’s been a campaign, a mad rush for the dark ages!

For some odd reason, the Muslim countries seem to follow their ‘Arab brethren’ and look for a leadership role from the sheikhs. It’s a faulty arrangement. Can there be a separate and distinct leadership that can be created? Can the moderate Muslim countries come forward, take the lead and enlighten the Muslims? May be one day or may be never.

What, however, Islam really needs now is a self-sustaining movement within the enlightened spheres. For starters, taking the route of ijma and ijtehad (religious consultation to keep pace with the changing times) may not be a bad idea. This process of consultation does not necessarily have to be conducted by the bearded and the turbaned but people who wear suits and ties, jeans and khakis can probably take the initiative and thereby end up doing a much better job.

Islam, if it has to survive, needs better leadership. The followers, the sincere ones and not the wretched Al-Qaeda or the Wahabi crowd, have to make hard choices. This is the time to put the house in order. This is the historical opportunity to make amends and seek forgiveness from those who have been hurt, bruised and battered by militant Islam and make a decision, once and for all times to come, that the faith itself is all about universal peace and harmony and free from those draconian hollowness of violence and aggression.

Lying on the comfortable sofa, sitting in front of TV, flipping across channels in search of PEACE-TV, perhaps the only worthwhile channel to watch, I suddenly came across for a second, in a small portion on the screen, the sight of a person opening bottle tops with teeth in the most crazy manner on AXN. With utmost curiosity I didn’t change the channel to figure out what was going on. So the small portion enlarged on the screen with a counter set to 0:00 and a young guy stood behind a table all covered with bottles. As the timer started, the guy started opening bottles with his teeth one by one in the most precise, unbelievably quick & stunning manner. When the clock struck 1 minute, all the 50 bottle tops had been removed emphatically by the young guy with so much vigor, courage & pain that his mouth could be seen bleeding from a distance. So as he lifted his head with the look of accomplishment, the whole crowd erupted into the most overwhelming response any person would die for. As most of them stood in applause, the golden message appeared on screen “NEW RECORD: MOST BOTTLE TOPS OPENED WITH TEETH IN 1 MIN”. Now the host appears and with full enthusiasm asks the guy how he feels about it, so with the sighs’ of last-moment-victory-disbelief he tells the audience how he felt nervous initially, how a few bottles in between got momentarily stuck in his gums and gave him a really tough time, how it was difficult to go on after the blood-spit and how he stayed strong and eventually spared none in the space of just 60 seconds!

Later the show ends and I come to know that it was ‘Guinness Book of World Records’, the show, assumed to be the most prestigious book to be included in. These few minutes of the program took me back to something I had once read in a book called “Islam & Modernism” written by one of the greatest Islamic scholars living today, Justice Mufti Taqi Usmani. I will now copy-paste a small portion from that.

“It reminds us an incident that occurred at the time of Caliph Haroon-al-Rasheed.

It is stated that a certain person sought the permission of Caliph to present an astonishing performance in his court. When the permission was granted he erected a needle upright on the floor and himself stood at a distance with a few needles in his hand. Then he took one of those needles in the other hand, aimed at the needle on the floor, and threw the needle in his hand toward it. People saw that this needle passed through the eye of the needle on the floor. He repeated this performance several times and never missed the target even once.

On seeing this astonishing feat, the Caliph ordered, “Give him ten dinars, and punish him with ten lashes!” The courtiers asked for an explanation of this equally surprising reward. The Caliph said, “He gets ten dinars for his accuracy of aim, dedication and ambition as a reward. But he will get ten lashes as a punishment for spending all his abilities in a thing that is of no benefit to him or anyone in the Hereafter”

I am not even sure whether to feel pity on or to criticize the young guy, the host & those people on AXN- And this doesn’t just apply to the people in the show, but to the whole world. Look at the West- INSPITE of having all the worldly success, all the prosperity, all the money, all the fame, all the glory, all the material goods, all the power, all the best products, all the glamour, all the glitter, all the pleasures and all the luxuries, How unsatisfied, how empty, how hollow, how restless, how unfulfilled, how distressed, how discontented, how depressed they are and how much they long, how much they crave, how much they yearn, how much they seek for a true meaning in life, for a purpose of human existence, for an ultimate truth, for an undeniable reality and LOOK AT US, We the Muslims, we have been given the treasure of knowledge, we have been told the purpose of existence, we have been explained the true meaning of life, we have been demonstrated how to attain it, we have all the answers to it, we have the divine revelations, we know the objective of life and have all the guidelines AND YET we live a life as meaningless, as purposeless, as ignorant, as astray, as useless and as worthless as them- EVEN IF we bow our heads down in prostration before God and remain in that position for the rest of our lives, we cannot pay the price of the single gift of the kalma, the greatest words on the face of this universe, that we have, that we were given WITHOUT any effort, without any asking & without deserving it. THEREFORE before it’s too late, before you breathe your last breath, before the angel Israel comes, before your soul departs, before your Creator calls you back, before you leave forever, before your energy extinguishes, before your voice turns speechless, before your eyes lose sight, before the Divine Stopwatch turns you motionless and before you become worthy of only being buried, I ASK YOU to change yourself, change your life, change your path, change your heart, change your perception, change your everything BECAUSE it wasn’t for no reason that the greatest human being of all time used to cry & cry & cry despite being guaranteed an undoubted salvation for his own self!

If I hand over a questionnaire to the whole world and ask them which question, currently in 2007, is the most sought after question of the modern age, I can bet that the highest votes will be acquired by “What is the solution towards peace in the whole world?” or “How can we make a peaceful world?”. You review any talk show, any conference, any high-authority meeting, any debate of prominence, the major concerns revolve with intensity around the same question; “How can there be peace in this world?”. Owing to different cultures, traditions, circumstances, prevailing conditions, lifestyles, upbringing, religions, people are bound to disagree with each other due to differences in the perception of reality and that is after all how the whole world works.

But it is a sad state of affairs that due to the ever-increasing gradient of materialism, the world is left with very few thinkers and philosophers, who can actually foresee beyond the spectrum of “what is happening” and enter the more essential zone of “why it is happening” instead. But there is another very important genre of people which is unfortunately even less abundant than the earlier, and they are the “religious intellects”. Infact such is their rarity that more than 90% of people are left with nothing but to believe that religion is for fools whereas secularism is for the brains. In the older times since man had not reached the rational reasoning & logical ability of today, religious preaching was as easy as abc. You just had to tell the listeners and they would accept it at once. But due to the expansion & milestones of science and technology, today you are living in a fool’s paradise if you expect the cream among people to have acceptance of religious sermons without an objective & argumentative approach.

I personally dont possess any doubts or even hints of reservations regarding any verse of Quran or any authentic saying of the prophet (pbuh) irrespective of the hidden wisdom behind them being known/unknown to me, but if I think same would be the case with others too, then I am highly mistaken for sure. I call it ‘escapism’ on my part that instead of striving to get the hidden wisdom for people around me, I just sit at home and criticise them for not having the same intensity of assurance as I have. Therefore being a mere student of Islam, I would humbly try to prove with reason & rationality how Islam is logically the only solution towards peace in the world and I would further request the readers to put aside all the disturbing pre-assumptions they have regarding Islam in the light of the ugly events that have unfolded in the recent years.

First & foremost, lets analyse the real reason behind this enormous lack of peace, brotherhood & tranquility in the world. There is no limit to desires, wishes & wants that people crave for. Since it is the innate nature of man, we cannot devise a strategy to change this aspect of ourselves. Times change and so does everything but instincts will never change. In contrast to our desires the actual things, achievements, awards, trophies, designations, honours, status, seats & objects are practically limited and not infinite at all. If I be more precise, whatever the whole world is running after today is limited. It automatically means that by the attainment of the above-mentioned goals by some people, the other people will be left unsuccessful in its attainment. Now, take a look at the whole world. What is the whole world going crazy after? I can say with utmost assurity that more than 95% people have the material world as their sole objective of life. Status, power, money, authority, wealth, fame, self-projection, popularity, self-recognition and everything and anything which has to do with materialistic things or worldly goals is the purpose of the whole world. It is obvious that by the fulfillment of purpose of one or a few people, the purpose of the others will be inevitably negated and left unfulfilled.

We all know it is the intrinsic nature of man that deep-inside us we all are selfish creatures. We cannot live happily at all when our purpose is unfulfilled while the purpose of others is fulfilled. And this unhappiness factor is even more multiplied due to our innate selfishness if the negation or fulfillment of our purpose is dependent upon the negation or fulfillment of others too. We can only be called hypocrites if we lie and say we are happy to see others succeed even if we fail ourselves. Everyone seeks success, everyone seeks happiness, everyone seeks satisfaction & everyone wants his goals be attained to death more than anything else. Its human nature and we cannot change it. There is nothing like selflessness in humans, its only a myth. Infact such is our nature that we rate ourselves never absolutely but always relatively while comparing with others.

So when the existing scenario consists of unlimited wants but limited possessions, how will human beings act? Greed, arrogance, hypocrisy, dishonesty, deceit, politics, jealousy, inferiority complexes, insensitivity, deception, leg-pulling, back-biting, snatching from others, ego-worship & lies will undoubtedly be the order of the day as is the exact case today everywhere. Peace, brotherhood, modesty, honesty, sharing with others, humanity will be only confined to school-books and children lessons, and even they too will be forced to change when they grow up and face the rubbish & nonsense of what we call in our utter ignorance today as “being practical”.

In the light of the above para, it is impossible to establish peace unless human beings have a purpose of life in which by the fulfillment of one person, the fulfillment of someone else is never negated. Infact the ideal perfect world would be the one in which by helping others in the fulfillment of their purpose, you attain your purpose to the fullest as well. Such perfect best-case-scenario world is only a dream for the modern materialistic fools of today because there is nothing infinite that everybody can have. Take the example of Oxygen; we all inhale it, we all breathe, so no one has a problem with it. But everybody is not rich, everybody cannot become the president, so most will have a problem with it. Imagine if oxygen was limited, how would people have fought to have it irrespective of others dying or not- You cant help it, its called human nature.

The only passion, objective, ambition, goal, purpose, wish, dream, want, aspiration, achievement & accomplishment that can be attained by the whole world without anyone having less than others is God Himself. Why?? Because God is infinite, God is unlimited, God is not confined, God is not lost by some when acquired by others, you dont need to snatch God from others to have Him – And that is not it, infact as I already mentioned that the perfect world would be the one in which by helping others in their ambition, we become successful in our own ambition as well, look at the beauty of Islam- by bringing others close to God, I will become closer to Him too- which means by letting others fulfill their purpose, I am not negating and infact fulfilling my own purpose too. That is the sole reason why Islam says again & again that we should strive for the world only according to our needs & necessities and not our desires/wishes/wants but the only purpose of life is Allah and nothing else. You tell me what is so rocket-science-complex about that? It is simple common sense, simple human logic, simple reasoning & 100% practical. There is a huge difference between ‘earning for living’ and ‘living for earning’- the earlier is a Muslim’s philosophy & the later is a disbeliever’s philosophy.

Before even thinking of closing this topic, I would counter argue a philosophy which people who dont believe in God & religion keep on repeating to support their claims. They say that religion divides humanity, religion itself is the cause of non-peace & that peace is only possible in this world if we have humanity irrespective of religion. One of the most famous upholders of this school of thought was the legendary musician John Lennon of “Beatles” who, in his revolutionary song “Imagine”, strongly stressed on the possibility of peace if there was no religion. Since I know only about Islam as a religion, I have a strong logical arguement against that. The difference between Islamic humanity & non-religious humanity is vital. Lets assume a world full of humanitarians with no concept of God & no concept of religion, just good human beings- Yes I agree the world would be peaceful & free of problems initially but the peace or humanity will be conditional. It would be conditional to the fact that people would be encouraged & willing to be good as long as they get goodness in return from others as well. The system would run peacefully as long as there is goodness from both sides otherwise they will get discouraged & eventually become how people are today. So the peace will only be a matter of time as long as the condition is not violated.

Now take a look at Islam, it brings in the concept of doing good for God irrespective of how people react in return because we expect and will get the reward in the Hereafter from God and not from people in this world- so that is unconditional goodness, unconditional humanity and such a system if implemented can run for longer periods of time unlike the previous. Take the example of the prophet Muhammad pbuh- who else could have prayed for the same people who had hit him with so many stones that his shoes were drowned in blood. Who else could have served the needs of the same old woman who used to throw garbage on him daily. Who else could have cleaned the sheet & said nothing at all to the same Jew who had intentionally urinated there. With the concept of God & Hereafter, the concept of unconditional righteousness is instilled but with the concept of humanity without God/religion, the concept of peace no doubt is possible but becomes conditional.

I know how the Muslims today are and I accept they have shown the worst example of Islam but what they do is not islam. Suicide bombings, violence, killings & bloodshed is anything but islam but unfortunately the deeds of muslims today- But can you blame the manufacturer of a car for the fact that an ignorant driver crashes it after every few months!

YOU & I

by a very talented and gifted cousin (MashAllah)

I was an entity who lacked existence
You desired and put me into life
I was a drop with filth as my origin
You desired and gave me superiority among creations
I was a loaf with meaningless flesh and bone
You desired and put me into shape
I was a body with no functionality
You desired and gave it a purpose
I was alive but my vision was dead
You desired and put light in my sight

I was infantile drowned in helplessness
You desired and put love in my mother’s heart
I was unique but lacked identity
You desired and put letters in my name
I was needy but lacked expression
You desired and put meaning in my call
I was a creature with no speech or sense
You desired and put words in my mouth
I was an animal who could only crawl
You desired and gave me posture of a human

I was human but had a deadly caprice
You desired and put innocence in childhood
I was an adult who became a slave to desires
You desired and put will over my wants
I was a sinner who didn’t fear your presence
You desired and put curtains over my deeds
I was ungrateful who frowned on every misfortune
You desired and gave sustenance after every sin
I was dependent yet never loved you
You desired and gave love despite independence
I was asleep and remained distant from you
You desired and kept awake waiting for proximity

I was blessed but counted only what I didn’t
You desired and picked qualities out of a trash
I was egoistic and assumed qualities as my inheritance
You desired and chose them from your treasures
I was flattered by my attributes yet fell from each
You desired and bore my defects to grant elevation
I was short sighted and owed success to ability
You desired and put the good fortunes in fate
I was blind to nature but lauded its beauty
You desired and put your artistry behind a veil

I was ignorant and kept chasing wrong paths
You desired and kept reducing hurdles on the way
I was unconscious and kept moving in dark tunnels
You desired and kept showing light at their ends
I was unaware and kept following traps
You desired and kept guiding me their locations
I was naïve and kept ignoring your directions
You desired and kept negating my negations
I was addicted to transgressions without guilt
You desired and became immune to forgiveness without apology

I was walking on an earth that kept waiting to swallow me
You desired and calmed it because it’s your kingdom only
I was floating on waters that were ready to sink me
You desired and made its flow steady, as its between us only
I was living in the air that kept charged for a storm
You desired and stopped it since you know what is unknown
I was breathing under a sky whose angels wanted my death
You desired and buried their hopes, as you perceive what they cant

I was arrogant and refused to take the first step
You desired and promised the remaining journey on it
I was cruel and deprived my forehead of its home
You desired and put me into prostration to quench its thirst
I was wronged and kept my hands away from their shelter
You desired and finally lifted them for a prayer
I was insufficient and moved towards you by a speck
You desired and came miles closer to me
I was unwilling and toddled towards you
You desired and came rushing to me

But Oh helpless poet, why are you writing this?
Your words lack any expression
Your expression has so many voids
Voids that are filled by your own nothingness
Your sentences dont fulfill an iota of the due right

Yes indeed my words are a mere creation, when they say
Because my heart is a creation, when it feels
And my mind is a creation, when it thinks
And this hand too is a creation when it writes

Because I am myself only a creation, not the Creator
Indeed I am just a man. You are Allah, the Almighty!
